Obama Birth Control Mandate

Obama held a press conference mandating that insurance companies provide free contraception to all of it's policy holders. This is another example of how the government funnels money from the bottom to the top.

In a free society if you want contraception covered by your insurance you choose a policy that provides that service. Under the Obama rule everyone who has insurance will foot the bill for a service which may be against their beliefs, or which they simply have no need for. Since all policies are required to provide contraception to its customers, the burden of this service will be shared by all policy holders.

Why can the President dictate what services a business is required to provide? While his administration cites preventative care as the reason for this measure, it should be noted that organizations such as planned parenthood already provide free contraception to those who are unable to afford it.

I surmise that like all bills and executive orders that come to fruition, the real reason is to give back to those responsible for putting our public officials in office. Not the constituents who vote on the basis of political rhetoric, but the corporate elite who finance the campaign that promulgate that rhetoric.

In the 2008 election cycle Obama was given 20 million dollars from the health care sector, the very same sector that stands to gain from insurances company mandates. The insurance companies will pass the cost down to the consumers, and just to reiterate many of these consumers will not receive any benefit from free contraception services. The manufacturers of birth control products will certainly see an increase in profits as well as the hospitals and doctors as more woman will be inclined to opt for invasive and elaborate forms of contraception. Each of these new forms of contraception require doctor visits and carry side effects. The Marina insertion for instance has a plethora of side effects including hair loss, acne, weight gains, migraines, back pain, panic attacks, bloating etc. These side effects lead to more doctor visits, and increase the over all cost of health care.

Nearly 60 million people or about 1/5 of the population had no health insurance in 2010. I don't see the benefit of driving the cost of health care even higher making it less affordable to more Americans, to solve a problem which does not exist. During the course of my life, I have never met anyone who did not have access to contraceptives, much less a person who had health coverage and didn't have access to them. So the people will further subsidize the corporate elite through unconstitutional measures such as this one, under the guise of providing people a service which no one is without.
